Sophiatown
Costume Designer, Milliner, Dyer, Stitcher
Augusta Savage Gallery, MA (2020)
UMass Amherst
Sophiatown was my MFA thesis project while at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. To respectfully represent the characters in my designs I chose to take a research trip to South Africa to learn of their history and community. To fund the trip and production of the exhibition at the Augusta Savage Gallery in Massachusetts, I successfully applied for funding from the UMass Arts Council, UMass Graduate School, UMass College of Humanities and Fine Arts and UMass Theater Department.
I created collages of my research from my trip to South Africa to accompany my costume designs. All of the hats for this production were made after I took a millinery workshop with the Huntington Theatre's milliner, Denise Wallace-Spriggs.
